An addiction is a behavior, which can not be controlled by the person who manifests it. This can be the result of the repetition of some action, which creates a habit in the person. These habits become, little by little, part of the personality, which makes it very difficult to modify. Internet addiction, along with drugs and food, is one of the most common nowadays. Technology has taken us to an era where we are all connected to all parts of the world, thanks to the internet and all the advances in cell phones. These devices so necessary today provide us with countless contents, among these social networks are the most used. These create a need and/or dependence on the affected, which according to studies has the same effect as alcohol in the brain.
Internet addiction has many adverse health effects, both mental and physical. Some of the emotional effects are depression, anxiety, inability to prioritize schedules, euphoria when using the computer or cell phone, feeling guilty, isolation, agitation, fear, mood swings. Among the physical effects we can highlight Back pain, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Headaches, Insomnia, Poor nutrition (not eating or eating too much to avoid being away from the computer), Poor personal hygiene (for example, do not bathe to stay in line), neck pain, dry eyes and other vision problems. These symptoms could affect a person for life, unless they receive the right help.
The solution for Internet addiction starts after recognizing that the problem exists. Sometimes people do not realize they need help, so the intervention of those around us is mandatory. Once the problem is detected, it is necessary to take actions that help the person to get out of the vicious circle in which they find themselves. Support groups are one of the best ways to combat addiction, because by being in contact with people who manifest the same problem, we can realize the way we are acting and thus be able to overcome any behavior harmful to our health.
