On page 161 of our text book we find an explanation of the grammar talking about verb + gerund or infinitive, which says that using the same verb among gerund or infinitive the meaning will be different, but it does not apply to all the verbs.
I will write the examples with my own words.
Verb + gerund
She will never forget getting a ride into a haunted castle. Meaning: She will not erase that experience of her mind.
They remember switching the lights off when they went on vacations. Meaning: Talking about the past.
Verb + infinitive
The lights were all burned because he forgot to switch off the control panel. Meaning: He forgot to do the action.
Remember to switch off the lights when you go out. Meaning: It's a reminder. Talking about the future.
It does not apply to all the verbs, i will write examples in which the meaning does not change:
My father continue smoking.
My father continue to smoke.
I start playing soccer.
I start to play soccer.
